Wonderful West Cork

Category: Editor by Online Staff

While ‘back to school’ is an ominous sign of the end of summer, at least this year the kids had a pretty decent run of good weather as opposed to recent years when the summers have been terrible with the weather coming right only once the kids had returned to school. I took the opportunity and made the most of the exceptional weather last week during my time off, spending a couple of days travelling around the peninsulas of wonderful West Cork and with the weather adding to the most breathtaking scenery, I really enjoyed the peace and quiet while myself and my son Mike photographed some beautiful landscapes. Visiting an early Burial Chamber near Goleen, we made our way to Mizen, Ireland’s most southerly point before taking the coast road towards Dunmanus and heading back towards Barley Cove to camp for the night.

The following morning we passed through Durrus where I decided to make a personal pilgrimage to the Air India Disaster Memorial just a couple of miles down the road toward Adrigole, where I shed a tear and thought back to that terrible event.

On we travelled, to Bantry and Glengarriff, before we pulled up at the almost hidden, rocky beach at Trafask in the shadow of the Caha mountains on the Beara Penninsula. Once more we shot some landscapes and as I watched Mike I was amazed at his technique and perspective with a camera, considering he is just 9 years old and I haven’t once tutored him in the art of photography.

Gary ‘Spike’O’Sullivan

This weekend Gary ‘Spike’O’Sullivan takes his professional career a stage further when he fights in Glasgow as part of a 3 year deal with promoter Frank Warren to be televised on SKY Sports. We wish him the best at The Post and while a Commonwealth title shot is on the cards for next year, we look forward to that eventual World title shot that is the Mahon man’s dream.

Congratulations

Well done to all those who received their Leaving Cert results recently and best of luck to those students who will receive their Junior Cert results in the coming weeks.

Sympathies

On behalf of myself and the rest of rest of the team at The Douglas Post, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the O’Driscoll family of Ballinlough at this time.
