Fine Gael’s Cork South Central Senator Jerry Buttimer has today slammed the government on its inaction when it comes to long term unemployment. In the last year alone the amount of long term unemployed has surged by over 72,000 people.
Senator Buttimer said “This government can no longer ignore the problem of the long term unemployed. There are currently over 291,000 people who have been out of work for more than one year. This number does not take into account the amount of people waiting to hear if they have qualified for job seekers allowance, nor does it take into account the number of people who have been refused jobs seekers allowance.
“This issue must be dealt with immediately otherwise we are facing down the barrel of a vast exodus of our people as they go in search of employment abroad. The government should be doing everything in its power to ensure that these people stay in Ireland, the only way to guarantee this is to create the conditions in which employment can be created.
“The governments banking strategy has failed in every way, not only has it cost the taxpayer billions but most crucially it has not started banks lending to businesses again. The government needs to create the conditions in which jobs can flourish; this government has failed to do this as is clearly evident from this shocking increase in the live register last month.
“I am calling on Fianna Fail and the Greens to tackle the jobs crisis, this is only way that we can have an economic recovery. The government however, doesn’t not have a jobs plan, Fine Gael does and it is based on a vision that will improve our infrastructure, that will make us internationally competitive, that will create thousands of jobs a vision that will dramatically reduce the amount of young people on the live register in 12 months.
“Fianna Fail and the Greens must either adopt Fine Gael’s vision relating to jobs or quite simply and preferably they should call a general election, so that the Irish people get a government that wants to rebuild Ireland, and create a new society that is fairer, more open and one that
